WFMU marathon day 6 (velvet painting edition)

Saturday, March 6, 2010 by Chris

what is it about painting on velvet that makes the subject so much more amazing? i have no idea! did you know that WFMU (or, more specifically, station manager ken) has a HUGE collection of velvet paintings? if you donate enough to the station, i'm sure they'll let you "adopt" the phil spector gets arraigned piece (along with a t-shirt, sticker, and three excellent dj premiums), which will no doubt make you much more attractive to members of the opposite sex.

and, just to up our google searchability, here's anthony bourdain's no reservations segment with chuck palahniuk where they head over to the portland, oregon's velveteria.

finally, here's some more music, this time from not bad meaning good, but bad meaning bad, a disc full of the most horrible raps from people who have no business rapping. this 2007 compilation was assembled for the show coffee break for heroes and villains, a now defunct show that was dedicated to playing hip-hop from only unsigned artists and currently lives on in a more bite size amount via one of the numerous podcasts offered by WFMU.

strawberry shortcake: strawberry rap

mister t: no dope no drugs

rodney dangerfield: rappin' rodney

dee dee ramone: funky man

cremasters of the unverse!

Monday, January 25, 2010 by Chris

i'm by no means a cremaster nut or anything (terrible website, guys), but i'm definitely interested in seeing the whole artsy fart nutbar thing from beginning to end. sadly, i wasn't able to make it to new york or wherever to see it installed at the guggenheim and according to wikipedia, "the full series was released in a limited series of 20 sets of dvds, sold each for at least $100,000, and will not be made available on mass-market dvd. however a 30-minute part of the third film is available on dvd."

wait, what? sure, there's a huge fucking book i can buy, but as fas as being able to actually watch the whole thing, i'm shit out of luck other than 30 minutes of the part in the middle?

no real clue why i'm getting bent out of shape about this... guess i'll have to find a torrent of the thing or whatever.

a bunch of these are still available at reasonable REAL art-object-ish prices over at art strikes back.

i would link to the artists individually, but (1) i'm lazy and (2) you should be able to do that yourselves by now anyway.

old rollercoaster tongue

Thursday, August 6, 2009 by Chris

"the juggalos get caught with the VCRs"

"r. kelly peeing on a sheep dog"

"naked lady with balloons"

"old rollercoaster tongue"

now that we're over the four hundo posts hump, i guess there are a few things that you could see as being recurring themes. juggalos, where r. kelly pees, naked chicks, and bill cosby are all right up there, and they're apparently also big deals for derek erdman who is one of my new favorite artists. seriously. go click around his site and see for yourself. all i'd end up doing is listing off some of the titles of his paintings in an attempt to make my point.

the cake is no longer virginal

Wednesday, August 5, 2009 by Chris
let's get in our time machine and look back on how awesome erotica was back in 1767.

the above image (by jean-honoré fragonard) depicts a woman sitting on a swing while a peeping tom lying at her feet is trying to glare up her skirt. as a symbol of loss of virginity, the lady lets one of her shoes fly into the air...

these words are almost entirely paraphrased from some wikipedia page, because i don't know enough about old fancy art to pull this sort of thing off the top of my head.

as an added bonus, i am now able to appreciate a visual gag from a little feat album cover.

when it comes to chicks with frighteningly long tongues and some crazy jelly shit, this marilyn minter chick means business. ART BUSINESS! TA DA!

way back when people gave a shit about what kissinger had to say about anything, she was buying 30 second ad space for a show she was in... or something. she was also reminding me how much i want some peanut butter ice cream with m&m's on top.

and what post here would be complete without mention of some artful skate decks, this time from supreme?

After a day like today, it's comforting to know people make nice things for me to look at.
