Just spottified this really great documentary series about Steve Reich. That's all really. Sorry the blog's gotte kinda run down recently. I have a bazillion things happening right now, as well as a bazillion things I keep meaning to post but don't get around to. Anyway, this is part one of a series, so follow it up if the first one is interesting.
ALSO, if you dig this, the 5 disc Nonesuch Boxset is stupid cheap over at amazon and everything on it is straight up SUPERB. PULL THE TRIGGER!

why does this make me so wistful for the spring of 2002? something about the cigarettes and the grime maybe? such a particular thing to have on my mind right now. regardless, this is one of the reasons that the internet is AWESOME, and a not so gentle reminder that there's still tons of stuff out there that is just waiting to be unearthed and shared by all.

"the best disguise is old n ugly unless you are already old n ugly then you just act british."
i'll bet cute 20-something baristas get told stories like this ALL THE TIME! even the semi-cute ones! has no one written a book about this yet? i'd write it myself, but i think the stink of in-authenticity would be lingering a bit too prominently.
it's friday! and i'm not dead!

been a second since i posted anything on here. i just started doing the twitter thing for the 7th time and it's finally actually consumed my life, which seems to be the point of maintaining a twitter acct.
holler at me over at @PicklesDickles. know though that this is just me, and not Zita, so feel free to shoot any/all crazy-awesome super-duper-fashion stuff or anything pertaining to RuPaul's DragRace my way, but don't expect anything in return.
here's some videos! i'm gonna get back on the bloggg horse hopefully over the weekend and dump a bunch of awesome in your face, but for now, rest easy in knowing that there is something to look forward to next monday.
malice in wonderland

instead of watching the new tim burton alice in wonderland, i'm just going to watch this 17 times in a row and call it day.
i love how old school animation implies that someone put in a TON of work to make the weird crap that most people would just stop at talking about making if it even gets that far down the conceptual chain of events.

wanna feel old?
by Chris
biggie died 13 years ago today. there. now you feel old.
a while back the excellent t.r.o.y. blog posted up the dj mister cee best of biggie mixtape. that's right, i'm speaking of the one and only mixtape that has been ego trip certified as the best mixtape of all time. read about it in the required reading book of rap lists.
the mister cee mix features one of my favorite biggie moments where him and tupac are both on the same stage at madison square garden:
WFMU marathon day 5 (FZ edition)

there seems to be three eras of frank zappa: early awesome zappa, mid period kinda annoying but still pretty awesome zappa, and late period stately and erudite (still totally awesome) zappa. it's pretty excellent to see this slightly surreal little clip from the late period zappa on the financial news network (this is the same guy who gave us dina-moe-humm after all). a playlist of the other clips from this show is right over HERE.
to tie this all back to WFMU, i found out about this from their stupidly awesome beware of the blog, which was the first piece of the puzzle for me getting turned on to the radio station.
here's a weird little oddity from terre t's mini marathon idiot box premium from this past fall. i never thought i'd get to hear a mono version of some early grunged up zappa, but here we are:
mothers of invention: trouble everyday (super rare MONO version)(1966)
best thing you're likely to see all friday

i mean, if your a NERD it is. such antagonistic sounding music coming from such wonderfully colorful blocks. it makes my day!
WFMU marathon day 4

i'm a librarian by degree, so whenever i see people navigating hyper organized collections of absurd amounts of crap like the above video, my eyes roll back in my head and my leg starts shaking wildly as if i were a dog getting its belly scratched.
onward to the music! the tracks i've got below are two of my favorites i'm gonna kick out during the whole of the marathon. these are both from trent's sound and safe pop off pop premium last year, which i slept on originally, but snapped up last winter during a mini 24 hr marathon.
beyonce: single ladies (maximum fx silk blindz party room)
kanye west: love lockdown (maximum fx 8bit lotus siikness)
this year trent is dishing out a dvd with 730 awesome songs on it, as well as the glowstick seen below.

black bark disco
Wednesday, February 24, 2010
by Chris

i'd never heard of black bark disco before today, but i'm a fan of the tone of the nekkid boobies bouncin' video i just saw. they have their entire album available for free download too, which is always a good thing.
this is how being in a band works these days, right? make an interesting video, get it noticed, give some of your music away on your site in middling quality downloads, and tour like a mother fucker...
i can always respect a band that keeps tom in their top friends on their myspace.
this reminds me of another video out there that use nudity covering black bars to its benefit:
and if this isn't enough music video nudity for you, head over to nudity in music video for a collection of stuff that used to get me all hot and bothered in middle school...

these guys have a hatchet with your FUNNY BONES name on it! HAR!
in all seriousness, i can't believe that this isn't in the dictionary next to the phrase "pitch perfect." like, when those chinese or russian kids are able to hear and play the just the right sounding note from memory or whatever, i imagine that this has been what's been going on behind their eyes.
awesome video
by Chris
sometimes i wonder if i'm completely jaded when it comes to whether or not i think a particular band or song is "good." the reasons that i like things are complex and based on any number of, let's admit it, really subjective and sometimes petty factors.
then, along comes something like this that really reminds me that there is music out there that can draw such a broad defining line in the sand that says "there is good, and there is bad, let us show you which is which."
well, what they really say is “the world is gone but not lost it can still be saved, all it takes is the people to listen. maybe if they will hear the message and change.” but i think we all know what they mean...
via dangerous minds.

this answers the question of what christopher lloyd has been up to for the past decade, as well as reinforces that the guy from friday night lights should stick to being in a (really really good) high school football show.
it's such a gamble when you get a face

looks like 1980 punk classic blank generation is finally getting a re-ish. i'm interested, but ther trailer doesn;t make it look that great.

great animation video by johnny kelly, who has more stuff on his vimeo page, and some more stuff on the site he shares with michael kelly, who either is or isn't (gotta cover all my bases here) related to johnny.
WKRP: the porno...?
Sunday, February 21, 2010
by Chris
who is the target audience for this? i'm not saying it's a bad idea, on the contrary in fact (looks like a ton of fun actually), just that it makes absolutely no sense to me.
i get that there are a ton of porn parodies coming out based on old tv shows that seem reasonable each in their own ways, but WKRP in Cincinnati? who asked for this?
the 30 rock porn on the other hand, makes perfect sense in its outright absurdity.
having said all that, these porn parodies seem to ultimately work best as trailers, and i can only see watching the full "feature" resulting in a letdown. the plots and dialogue seem to be competently written by porn standards, but once you get to the people doing the deed, so much of the humor washes away and turns into strained expressions and grunt thrusting.
