a while back the excellent t.r.o.y. blog posted up the dj mister cee best of biggie mixtape. that's right, i'm speaking of the one and only mixtape that has been ego trip certified as the best mixtape of all time. read about it in the required reading book of rap lists.

"I made this for Tommy Boy as a promo item in the late ’90s to reintroduce myself to the public. It was to launch off the reissue of Psychoanalysis and a new project, A Prince Among Thieves. I just wanted to make something different from the old traditional mixtape that was out at the time. I had my friends and mom do little intro pieces to the songs.

I wanted to make it appear like I was this elusive, eclectic guy, and they were describing my work to those who weren’t familiar with me. The photo [on the back] is a picture of my son when he was about 3 or 4. He was always facinated with the turntables now he’s a DJ himself at 17. I put a lot of work into that tape, I’m glad that it’s still being enjoyed."

i mean, i can't hate on either, but the slowed down video with the hip-hop medley is pretty next level. hip-hip-hooray for dyslexus for the mashup, even though their site is incredibly terrible.

when i strike up a conversation with you, the fine people of the midwest, would you please stop trying to regale me with their many and varied stories of meeting slug or ant or anyone else associated with atmosphere? not that i'm calling bullshit on those dudes, cause they're all fine and well and high quality mcs. the thing that gets my goat is that there's seemingly a tremendous lack of diversity as far as anything other than rhymesayers is concerned.



now that i've put that out there, here's some good shit from sage francis, a lesser known dude that runs in the same rap coterie as the atmosphere people. i haven't listened to SF in a long time, but recently picked him back up, with my ears having been freshened by the passage of time. dude has been around for a long long time, but the album i got into first was his work with joe beats as non prophets back when lex records was just starting out.
