bad brains doc

Monday, February 8, 2010 by Chris

this looks amazing. the bad brains have been mythical figures in the hardcore scene for so long, and this looks to get the tone just right. sure they were the catalyst for a ton of bands, and every good thing said about them in these clips rings true, but they were also major fuck ups in a ton of ways. hopefully we'll get the well rounded documentary that the band deserves.

i've said it before, and i'm sure i'll say it again, but if the history of american hardcore is even remotely interesting to you, pick up this book. do it. don't think about it, just buy it.

FEAR

BLACK FLAG

MINUTEMEN

seriously, if you're not following dangerous minds, i have nothing to say to you. because of them, i know about this. suddenly my world is an ever so slightly better place to be spending my life in.

also, if this is evn remotely interesting to you, i advocate promptly picking up a copy of steven blush's american hardcore.

if there could be a muhammad ali of the hardcore world, it'd be bad brains. head and shoulders above everyone else in the scene.

one of the first things i did once i realized i had four jobs was to start spending some money as if i had a lot of it to throw around. one of the first stops was the roir site to score some sweet bad brains stuff. they're still selling the first album on cassette? how about that there exists in our world bad brains flip flops? vans is making bad brains kicks, and you can pay to have "pay to cum" as your ringtone.

if the bad brains reputation stays even remotely true, then they've immaculately fucked this up somehow, but i really hope not. regardless, here's a track from the oft overlooked second album, as well as the latter half of the above clip.

bad brains: how low can a punk get? (pvc records, 1983)

hardcore humpday

it's weeekly, people!

two weeks in and i'm already wandering off the beaten hard-core path with some fugazi, which tecnically falls slightly out of the defined stage-diving, collar-bone-shattering, white-power-baiting HC era. whatever.

my buddy nick hepped me to a fuzagi show from 1990 in madison that's over at symphony of ghosts, and i would be a huge asshole if i didn't pass it along.

you should head over to discord and buy some albums cause they're dirt cheap, post paid and will knock your socks on your ass.

fugazi: waiting room (dischord, 1988)

fugazi: merchandise (dischord, 1990)

fugazi: cash out (dischord, 2001)

lo! behold! hardcore humpday makes it's highly unrequested return!

via videosift.com

i recommend bypassing the rose-colored-lens look back at american hardcore presented by this recent documentary...

and heading directly to the source with the book that came before it. pretty strange that the same dude who wrote the book is credited as the writer for the doc, and somehow it all got extremely watered down in the translation, in my opinion at least.

as you'd expect, the soundtrack's thoroughly solid.

fear: new york's alright if you like saxophones (slash records, 1982)

it's also worth noting that the dude from the cro-mags has what i hear is an incredible autobiography as well as a remastered first cro-mags album, all available for purchase over at PUNKHOuse. i have my eye on all that, plus the "musicians are just assholes waiting to happen shirt." better not beat me to it.

when our forefathers were on the battle fields fighting for democratic freedom, this is the world of diversity and decision that they were granting us.

this is like when jimi hendrix covered all along the watch tower and dylan was all "dude did it better than me, and it's my song."

original shit the bed audio:

Shit The Bed - Monolith (mario paint)

8-bit hip-hop medley audio:

i mean, i can't hate on either, but the slowed down video with the hip-hop medley is pretty next level. hip-hip-hooray for dyslexus for the mashup, even though their site is incredibly terrible.

hump-day hardcore (district of columbia style)

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 by Chris

my brother is in fact in town for the week, seeing the sights and sounds of the midwest, which will tie my hands ever so slightly as far as posting youtube vids and the grip of vinyl 45 rips i'm holding on to for a day or so.

any suggestions on where to take the brother? so far i've fed him a pastee form teddywedgers and cheese curds and beer from the olde fashioned...
