his soul is still dancing

i can't wait to see this movie. i watched the OG (see the trailer way down at the bottom) a couple months ago and thought it was fucked up, but in such a great way.

while there doesn't seem to be a whole lot in common between the two films other than a crazy dope addicted cop going crazy, i can totally get why abel ferrara would take issue with the situation, but hoping all the people behind the movie are in the same streetcar, and it blows up seems a bit much. the best thing to come out of this other than the actual film itself seems to be the responses from the characteristically cray herzog.

from an interview with the defamer:

Speaking of which, the original film's director, Abel Ferrara, has vowed to fight this project, and —

Wonderful, yes! Let him fight! He thinks I'm doing a remake.

Have you talked to him?

No. I have no idea who Abel Ferrara is. But let him fight the windmills, like Don Quixote.

Have you heard his comments at all? He says he hopes "these people die in Hell."

That's beautiful!

Do you relate to that passion?

No, because it's like theater thunder. It's like being backstage in the 19th century, with the machines that make thunder. It has nothing do with with his film. But let him rave and rant; it's good music in the background.

You did a remake before with Nosferatu, but —

It was not so much a remake as an homage to Murnau. But I don't feel like doing an homage to Abel Ferrara because I don't know what he did — I've never seen a film by him. I have no idea who he is. Is he Italian? Is he French? Who is he?

(/interview thing)

here's the trailer for the original movie that just happens to have been reissued on dvd recently.

wait a second... you don't think that abel ferrara might have something to gain by stirring the pot and reminding people that the new herzog thing, while not a remake/sequel/reimagining in almost every possible sense of the word(s), has roots in his not exactly wildly popluar or well known film do you...

oh yeah, the poster at the top of the post is from a contest that aint it cool news was sponsoring. swing over there to check out some other cool looks.

there's all these sight gags

hey! look! it's what the monopoly movie's gonna be about! thanks ain't it cool news for letting me know that a terrible idea in theory is going to be one in execution too!

"I created a comedic, lovable loser who lives in Manhattan and works at a real estate company and he’s not very good at his job but he’s great at playing Monopoly. And the world record for playing is 70 straight days – over 1,600 hours – and he wanted to try to convince his friends to help him break that world record. They think he is crazy. They kid him about this girl and they're playing the game and there’s this big fight. And he’s holding a Chance card and after they’ve left he says, ‘Damn, I wanted to use that Chance card,’ and he throws it down. He falls asleep and then he wakes up in the morning and he’s holding the Chance card, and he thinks, ‘That’s odd.’"

"He’s all groggy and he goes down to buy some coffee and he reaches into his pocket and all he has is Monopoly money. All this Monopoly money pours out. He’s confused and embarrassed and the girl reaches across the counter and says, ‘That’s OK.’ And she gives him change in Monopoly money. He walks outside and he’s in this very vibrant place, Monopoly City, and he’s just come out of a Chance Shop. As it goes on, he takes on the evil Parker Brothers in the game of Monopoly. He has to defeat them. It tries to incorporate all the iconic imageries -- a sports car pulls up, there's someone on a horse, someone pushing a wheelbarrow -- and rich Uncle Pennybags, you're going to see him as the maĆ®tre d' at the restaurant and he's the buggy driver and the local eccentric and the doorman at the opera. There's all these sight gags."

i'd been meaning to watch man bites dog for a long time now, and finally got around to it. i didn;t know much about the premise other than "black comedy in which a documentary crew follows serial killer" which had me hooked. the movie ended up being really great and it's a huge bummer that it seems to be the beginning and end of these guys film career.

criterion put out the dvd, which means copious amounts of extra features, one of which was their fantastic short film that really shows the breadth of range they were capable of. it's a real shame that in this painfully short little blog post i'm able to present the entirety of a group of promising artists' career, but i guess that's how it goes.

according to imdb, "a 'c4' is a document in belgium which you receive from your employer to end your contract, for example after you were fired. (the common term "getting a c4" is synonymous with being fired.) you need this document to apply for unemployment benefits."

awesome overload!
