i had been listening non-stop to the then-new first strokes album, and all the american reviews were saying how they were basically a watered down version of television, which started me down the long and winding road of finding out that almost every great band in recent years has behind it a collection of influences that are way better and more interesting than the band in question.

richard hell (see below) was literally in half of the good bands in new york before he did his own thing, and here's the one song he released with television before moving on/getting booted out.
