what the fuck is it with neil young always dicking over his fans? neil young, crumpy old codger that he is, is one of the few living musical geniuses. since i'm of this mind set, i've been impulsively purchasing the archive discs that he's been putting out these past couple of years, and awaiting the much beleaguered release of his archives box set.

it turns out that the set in question is available in three completely retarded versions: 1) 10 blu-ray discs and a big ol honkin book for $300, 2) 10 dvds and the book for $200, and 3) 8 cds and a booklet for $100.

first glaring problem: two eighths of the set are discs i (and every fan who's been waiting on the set) have already bought (massey hall & fillmore). second glaring problem: i could give two flying rat-fucks about either blu-ray or dvd audio. not to say that i'm not a stickler for sound quality, but those are both cumbersome, locked down media formats that i'm not going to be able to convert for ipod use or back up on my computer (fair use, motherfuckers!), which is pretty much a deal breaker for me. also: i'm a complete nerd and want all my shit to look nice on my bookshelf for when company comes over, which won't happen since the new box set renumbers and repackages that shit so that if i'm gonna be as OCD as i am, the discs i alread bought are gonna look retarded. and yeah, i see that they sell the individual cds, but the 6 cds i want are gonna come to almost the full price of the cd set itself, so i might as well upgrade the hole shebang. and fianlly, what's with the most recent "caterbury house" disc not being included? if you're gonna dick people over by rereleasing shit they're been buying in good faith for two years, you shouldn't half ass it, gramps.

on a related note, fella has a new "largely ecocar themed" "auto-centric concept album" coming out tomorrow. despite my adoration of the guys back catalog, nothing about the previous sentence makes me feel good.
