I'm bummed that this isn't getting a vinyl release like previous volumes, but I freely admit that I'm part of a dwindling number of dudes who give a shit about DJing actual physical records.

Regardless of my record nerd crustiness, the addition of cool stickers from the Burlesque of North America designer dudes, and the nice price of 7 bucks puts this in your hands if it's your deal.

i'd never heard of black bark disco before today, but i'm a fan of the tone of the nekkid boobies bouncin' video i just saw. they have their entire album available for free download too, which is always a good thing.

this is how being in a band works these days, right? make an interesting video, get it noticed, give some of your music away on your site in middling quality downloads, and tour like a mother fucker...



i can always respect a band that keeps tom in their top friends on their myspace.

sometimes i wonder if i'm completely jaded when it comes to whether or not i think a particular band or song is "good." the reasons that i like things are complex and based on any number of, let's admit it, really subjective and sometimes petty factors.

then, along comes something like this that really reminds me that there is music out there that can draw such a broad defining line in the sand that says "there is good, and there is bad, let us show you which is which."

well, what they really say is “the world is gone but not lost it can still be saved, all it takes is the people to listen. maybe if they will hear the message and change.” but i think we all know what they mean...

g-unit ties be damned, i really dig jake one's production style, and adding the black card lookalike for the instrumental download was a nice touch. ego trip's design mastermind brent rollins knocked this out of the park.

the new ep from wolf parade (and many others) dude spencer krug, alias moonface, titled dreamland and consisting of the 20 minute song marimba and shit-drums, is available for a pay what you want sort of pricing scheme ala radiohead, and i gotta say that i'm really digging it. 12 bucks plus shipping is a bit steep to pay for 20 mins on one side of vinyl, but i'm thinking that each time i listen to this thing between now and january 26th i'm gonne be getting closer and closer to going for it.

the new issue of wax poetics is pulling one hundred percent heat. i remember someone on a message board somewhere commenting that each issue if wax poetics was only as good as the individual articles, which is true to a point and the main reason why i'm unlikely to ever get a subscription... but this issue is looking to be untouchable in so far as truly interesting topics.

articles on spike lee, ralph bakshi, blaxploitation soundtracks, numero's brotherman soundtrack and (picklesdickles fave) light: on the southside, black dynamite director scott sanders, and cover boy curtis mayfield? SOLD!

perfect bound cover to cover quality that is well worth your hard earned money if you are the sort of person who likes good things.

edan. edan. edan. been waiting on a new album form this guy for a while now, and the one he's cobbled together/produced/performed on sounds like it's loaded with potential.



the lowdown from stones throw: "Edan was given access to the Traffic Ent. Group's back catalog of old school rap - labels like Magic Records, Chocolate Star, P&P among others - and asked to create something new out of it, whatever he wanted. What began as a simple mixtape, two years later turned into a 30-min record of dance, rap and punk, utilizing everything from turntables, tape echo, guitar, moog and maybe even kazoos."



as an added bonus, the first (only?) 1000 lps come with a unique hand made cover from edan himself (see above examples). head over to stones throw for the goods.

if you need any further convincing, head over to nickle and dime radio with $mall ¢hange, where edan played the whole thing. try before you buy i say. the timing is a bit off, so rewind a ways from where it's marked, or listen to the whole show from front to back cause it's awesome through and through, not just the edan bit.

don't forget, this is the guy who can lecture/mc about hip-hop history while cutting his own records! i advocate copping the lp 'fore they're all gone.

i've been listening to the band girls a lot lately. they have a really great video for their song lust for life (directed by these dudes), which i was originally hoping to be an iggy cover, but instead got something way more awesome.

i think we can all agree that the super awesome fully nekkid version is of course quadruple times more perfect.

last night was fucking awesome for so many reasons that are surprisingly contradictory.

gavin (of vice/street boners fame) really nailed it pretty succinctly in a description of the SXSW shows the other week: "you want to see these bands in a basement, with the lights out, before anybody has ever heard of them."



well, it wasn't a basement, and the lights didn't even dim a smidge till half way into the first set, but these were definitely bands not many people had heard of i'm pretty sure. there was seemingly no advertisement (seriously, the only way i knew about the show was cause there was a flyer saying "tonight!" next to the cream and sugar at espresso royale), and the show was at arguably the most boringest place to see a show ever, the rathskellar.



early on, the dude in cerebral ballzy quipped, to the largely absent audience, "thanks for coming out to your cafeteria guys!" before saying something about how he had to take a shit, followed by saying he thought he might puke. their shit was loud, fast, dirty, and really fucking good. i felt bad for the guys since there was literally no one on the floor except a dude from one of the other bands, which is sorta how shit went for most of the night until about 10:45 or so when more people started showing up (things had officially started at 8:15) and it started to feel like a real damn show.

even if they had done the show at the now-defunct club 770 it would have been half-stillborn. couldn't one of the people from WUD have volunteered a garage or a basement or some shit? perhaps there would be insurance worries, which got the death sets plug pulled due to crowdsurfing (are we still calling it that?).

i'm not mad at the people who put this shit together, cause in reality, the sad madison truth is that there's not really any other place that this would have been able to happen (the frequency? maybe?), and the fact that the bands got paid, we all got a free show, and no one lost their lives or their virginities, is tip-top in my book.

every group was way over the top and really awesome, excepting totally michael, but that's more because his glossy Andrew WK meets ben folds in a not-bad-yet-not-good-sorta-way schtick stood out against the other bands unwashed fuck you edge.

i picked up the cerebral ballzy disc and the ninjasonik ep, bits of both will be on their way down the digital line as soon as i get a sec.

remember when everyone lost their shit when radiohead and trent reznor let the internet-having music-purchasing public determine what they wanted to pay for their albums? everyone was going on and on that this was the beginning of the new way to distribute music int eh post-napster, post-piratebay, post-p2p, post-menstrual world.



do you also remember when girl talk released feed the animals the same way? well, the label behind girl talk since way back when he was rocking pittsburgh basements, illegal-art (that's their office in the topper-most pic), is baby-stepping their way towards releasing their entire back catalog of audio collages in this forward-thinking, pay-what-you-will fashion. so far, there are five albums available, and more are on the way.



i've been a fan of steinski's for a while now, and i cannot speak highly enough about the compilation that illegal-art has available. steinski is the grandpappy of every epicly awesome culture-loaded remix album that is out there today. dude also maintains a superb website with tons of info/opinions about intellectual property, music, and general musings.



i know next to nothing about the bran flakes, oh astro, or realistic, but if they're anywhere near as awesome as girl talk or steinski, i'll swing back through and drop some cash to support them putting this sort of stuff out!
